The  nugget that became The Thief’s Daughter goes back a long, long way, almost as long as Temper the Wind. Certainly longer than His Brother’s Wife.

Back in the early days when I thought in stories but never knew those stories would go anywhere, I made a folder in which I would put scraps of paper where I jotted ideas down. One of the first notes in there, tattered and worn, was a sketchy note about a woman who finds a medal in her late father’s items. I knew there had to be an engraving or something that she could follow to the real owner.

It needed a bit of fleshing-out, the characters weren’t even clear, but I knew some day that would be a romance. In my old and ragged note, the man was obviously going to fall in love with the girl, but that’s a thin story line, isn’t it?

There is another tidbit that goes with this novel. As kids, we had long known about a family heirloom jewelry set, which had to be broken up when it came down to us girls. It was hard to split the set up, but with three girls and only one matching jewelry set, it couldn’t stay together. We are a very close-knit family, though, so each of us knows who got what of the set.

One piece of this set is on the back cover of the book. I won’t tell you which of the jewelry pieces is mine, but my cover artist was very good about using one of the pictures I took with my good camera.
