Oh, the story of this book. Sigh. First of all, I had THE HARDEST time coming up with a title. I don’t even want to look back at the first iteration.
But to begin with the first nugget of an idea, I have to look back almost two decades. I had an agent that I got when I entered a competition with Temper the Wind. She struggled to find a publisher for Temper, so suggested I write in another genre, and recommended Regency.
Regency England? I hardly knew where to start my research. This was before I became comfortable browsing the internet, and quite possibly the resources that are available online today might not have even existed then, or were in their infancy, too.
I had an idea for my characters, but books are more than the people inside. They are the houses and the fields and the horses and the laws of the time. And I had to learn all of that.
I had known about Abebooks dot com, and I used it to my advantage. If you have read my About me page, you know that I struggle with a rare disease, so traipsing to the library to get resource books is out. I needed a research library in my home. Even now, with membership in a number of helpful websites and organizations, reference books close at hand are still essential, and over the years I have built up a respectable collection. And I use them!
One of my favorite things about this book is the gifted audiobook narrator I was lucky enough to get. If you like listening to books, you will enjoy Stevie Zimmerman’s rendition.
